We now have an exciting opportunity for a Peatland Science and Monitoring Officer to join the CNPA, working with colleagues, land managers, and contractors throughout the National Park to implement essential surveys and scientific monitoring of peatland restoration sites, thereby increasing the rate and scale of peatland restoration, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, promote carbon storage, restore peatland functions, improve habitats, and benefiting biodiversity.

The Role:
As our Peatland Science and Monitoring Project Officer, you will work with colleagues, land managers, and contractors throughout the National Park to implement essential surveys and scientific monitoring of peatland restoration sites, thereby increasing the rate and scale of peatland restoration, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, promote carbon storage, restore peatland functions, improve habitats, and benefiting biodiversity.
You will lead on coordinating the collection, analysis and reporting of data relating to the programme.
As the postholder you will lead on the development and delivery of new survey methodologies that support the work and coordinate scientific work to answer key operational research questions.
You will also develop and implement systems for robust data management, interpretation and presentation as well as working closely with the GIS Officer in development of the GIS systems to support the team’s work. Collaboration with Peatland ACTION delivery partners and the wider scientific community will be essential to this role.

About You:
To be considered as our Peatland Science and Monitoring Project Officer, you’ll need:
Good knowledge of upland land management practices and related challenges
Practical experience of organising and carrying out upland surveys and ideally peatland specific surveys
An excellent understanding of peatland ecology, with relevant botanical knowledge of upland and mire species
An understanding of the hydrology and geomorphology of peatland systems
A highly competent GIS analyst with the skills to guide the work of others and in procuring and interrogating land use information in GIS
Experience of supervising or managing contractors
Experience of developing and maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues’ managers, agencies, organisations, contractors, and suppliers to deliver successful monitoring and science projects
Proven ability to manage workloads, achieve targets, and deliver projects on budget and on time
Articulate with excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
Highly organised and possessing good time-management skills
Computer and IT literate
A full UK driving licence
Flexible approach to working hours as evening and weekend working will be occasionally required
Physically fit and able to walk into remote locations and navigate across challenging upland terrain in all weather
